Ask a Therapist: Is counseling/therapy just for people with severe mental illness?

Q&A with  Kristen Martinez, Seattle Therapist

Counseling and therapy has long been assumed to only be appropriate for people with severe mental health issues, but that isn’t the whole truth; therapy can help anyone who is looking for a different perspective, self-awareness, or a little bit of extra help or support going through a tough time. Furthermore, going to see a counselor or therapist doesn’t mean that there’s anything wrong with you or you are weak; it actually means that you’re strong enough to know what you can and can’t handle, and it shows that you’re taking steps to care for yourself and find ways to meet your needs.
