The good ones don’t! Advice is what everyone else in your life gives you when you’re having a problem or going through an issue, and as you might recall, your relationship with your therapist is unlike your relationship with anyone else in your life. Our place is not to judge, assume, or tell you what to do with your life; after all, we as therapists see you as the authority on your life, the one who knows you best, and the expert in ways that you can solve your problems and create your best life. Because of this, we don’t give advice – it’s just not our place to tell you how to live your life. Plus, if we’re viewed as the ones who are always telling you what to do, that doesn’t really build autonomy, empowerment, or self-sufficiency in you, does it?
